Extra virgin olive oil and body care, an ancient bond
The cultivation of the olive tree has very ancient roots, the mother of all medicinal plants and has always been linked to man; its millenary history is intertwined with religious rituals, myths and legends.
BETWEEN HISTORY, MYTHS AND LEGEND
In Greek mythology Athena gave birth to a tree with silver leaves, called an olive tree, to “light up the night, heal wounds and offer nourishment to the population”.
Virgil instead, in the Georgics, describes the olive tree as a sacred plant and the product of its fruits used to heal wounds, sores and burns, thanks to its healing and moisturizing properties, capable of stimulating skin regeneration.
Olive oil is always present in the Catholic sacraments of baptism, confirmation and extreme unction, in liturgical gestures, which provide for its use in priestly and bishopric ordinations.
In Roman times, olive oil, intended not only for food consumption, was used to produce perfumed balms and ointments for massages and as a medicine. The Romans also consumed large quantities of it for body hygiene, in the kitchen and for worship practices. Furthermore, the heavier oil was intended for lighting. It was also distributed to the soldiers, who in the winter season used it to grease the body and shelter from the cold.
The first to be interested in olive oil as a medical aid was probably Hippocrates born on the island of Kos in 460 BC.
It was Galen, however, a well-known Greek doctor who died in Rome in the second century after Christ, who put olive oil at the center of many preparations; suggested the use of olive oil to lighten the face and hands, but also to stimulate hair growth and prolonged use to combat alopecia and dandruff.
