TITONE

Region: Sicily

Company name: Antonina Anna Titone’s Titone Organic Farm

Locality: Contrada Locogrande (Trapani)

Historical context and birth of the company

The Titone family has always paid particular attention to human health. It is no coincidence that they have been pharmacists for generations, with a passion for agriculture and olive growing in particular.
Since 1936, in a strip of land between Trapani and Marsala, with Erice behind, Mothia the ancient and the Egadi in front, the Titone family has been producing quality, good and natural oil. The company was one of the first in Sicily to convert to organic farming.
Since 1992 all stages of processing have been controlled and certified. Today the Titone company produces two types of oil – obtained from olives of the Cerasuola, Nocellara del Belice, Biancolilla cultivars – hand-picked and pressed after a few hours in the company oil mill.
The Titone family has managed to create an oil that has the millenary scents of this part of Sicily inside, gaining recognition all over the world.
The territory of the province of Trapani is the land of good oil. In fact, olive growing here has very ancient roots, now recognized by the Valli Trapanesi PDO, in whose area the Titone family’s olive groves fall entirely.

“I behaved like a devoted daughter by deciding to carry on my father’s creation, because I felt it was right, right, ethical. Some of us children had to take charge of the company and slowly, although I was entering a world I knew nothing about, I managed to make it my own. Studying as much as I can every type of subject and following every possible type of course.”

Variety
The company in Sicily was one of the first to convert to organic farming by adopting, since the eighties, systems of recovery and enhancement of natural resources, using, for example, alternative traps to the traditional ones for the capture of the olive fly. .
The soil is fertilized with natural substances, and the practice of green manuring and grassing with legumes is also adopted.
The company has been collaborating for several years with the Faculty of Organic Agriculture of the University of Palermo, in 2005 an experimental field led by prof Caleca to study the natural defenses against the olive fly, Caleca recognized the validity of the trap designed by Nicola Titone, a system based solely on water and blue fish.

The cultivated varieties, of course, are all indigenous such as Biancolilla, Nocellara, Cerasuola which also allow the production of excellent blends and one of the best DOP in the world.
