Company name: Api Latina by Marco Siniscalco

Location: Latina (Latina)

Historical context and birth of the company

Marco Siniscalco and Gastone Gaiba are two friends united by a passion for beekeeping, in particular for urban beekeeping

What is Beekeeping for Latin Bees?

Combine the protection of bees, pollinating insects par excellence, by monitoring the quality of the urban environment and, in particular, the level of pollution, biodiversity and botanical richness present within the city of Latina. These are the main objectives of beekeeping in the city. The constant diffusion of hives in urban contexts is becoming a very widespread and tested practice: cities offer numerous nectar sources not treated with pesticides and herbicides and, first of all, guarantee nectar and pollen for bees for a very long period of time thanks to diluted blooms throughout the year. Cities are hospitable places for bees and provide an alternative to traditional beekeeping.

“We decided to place our urban hives in a “widespread” way, both for logistical and safety reasons, to cover the largest portion of the territory. The choice was also successful from the point of view of the production of a highly territorial honey. In fact, in urban contexts, botanical species and honey plants in particular are many and very abundant thanks also to human intervention. This means that the honey produced is very different according to the areas where the hives are located.”

Technical contents

The most central apiary is located in a green area of the city of Latina: hedges, fruit trees, aromatic herbs and small portions of uncultivated lawn give rise to “Casal della Selva” wildflower honey.

Marco and Gastone also bet on the outskirts of the city, placing some hives in a peri-urban area of Latina, where an old drainage ditch bordered by hundreds of acacia trees (Robinia Pseudoacacia) offers fragrant buds from which a generous acacia honey is obtained. “Fosso del Mangano” in purity.
