Georgia and olive growing
For the first time, Georgia becomes part of Marco Oreggia’s International Guide Flos Olei 2021.
In this country, the first olive tree was brought from Turkey by George Svanidze, a businessman and patron.
To date, more than 1,000 hectares have been planted and, in 2016, the first Georgian olive oil was produced. The areas most suitable for olive growing are found in the eastern regions, but even the central ones show good potential.

Government interest is very strong, to the point that the Ministry of Agriculture has launched the Plant the Future program, through which over 2,500 hectares have been cultivated over the last 5-6 years and dozens of successful businesses have been established under these programs. State aid is very high, which comes to co-finance 70% of the costs of starting new businesses.
But the Georgian government’s interest is not limited to purely economic factors. In fact, also considering that olive trees have a unique ability to restore degraded land, reducing the negative effects of the climate and in line with the principles of sustainable development, Georgia aims to introduce good agricultural practices in the country.
Today, having a bottle of Georgian oil on the table is no longer a myth
